Echoes of Drowning by Lis McDermott ~ Review & Blog Tour

Writer's picture: HalesHales

A story of eternal and enduring love

It is 2018, and Jess is delving into the mysterious and tragic events surrounding the sinking of the Aliciana in 1915. Her only link is Amy, who, although now deceased, survived only to mourn the loss of her husband, Will.

Following her mother's death, Jess and her father, Danny, move to Llaneirw on the Welsh coast. Both grieving, Danny begins renovating their new house in a desperate attempt to make it home. But the onset of recurring nightmares leads Jess to realise they have a spirit in their house and a mystery to solve.

A short break to Anglesey with Lukas sees the mystery deepen when Jess is unnerved by his grandfather and distressed when she catches sight of a photograph of his great-grandfather. Jess soon discovers that uncovering the reasons for her reaction to the image will help in solving the mystery. But first, Jess must find a way of convincing those around her that her dreams are, in fact, the truth.

I really enjoyed this book, it seemed to have me hooked pretty quickly and I was soon engrossed in the storyline. Jess our main character had a lot going on in her own life dealing with the loss of her mum and the move to somewhere completely new. However, this does not stop her from wanting to help Amy and find out the truth about Will.

I really enjoyed how the story was pieced together and we got a little bit more of the story at a time, I felt that doing it ike this was really beneficial to the story compared to a whole 'big reveal' of everything and then an aftermath. By having it revealed in smaller pieces it really brought the other characters into it and to life in some parts too!

I liked the fact that not only was Jess helping Amy find the truth but I also think that this was helping Jess to deal with her own grief about her mum passing away. I thought that the way the book was written was really great and I found that I just kept having to read 'one more chapter' as I felt very invested in finding out what had happed to Will to!
