A psychological suspense about silence and its sinister effects on a family and a village from the author of Blackthorn Wood.
When Laurie Helm’s mother dies, Laurie must return to the village where she grew up. It’s a place she left twenty years ago, and she’s hardly seen her mother since. With no siblings or other family, Laurie is left to sort out the house and estate, and to face some of the reasons she left Chapel Field in the first place.
Ed Diamond grew up in Chapel Field—but it hasn’t been much of a life. After his father passed away, Ed was the last person left who could care for his disabled sister. But the villagers have their own opinions on that . . .
Laurie and Ed met when they were kids, and as a disillusioned teenager, she joined in with the systematic tormenting of the Diamond family under the guidance of her friend, charismatic Marcus Butcher—until one of his pranks went too far. Now, reunited as adults, Laurie and Ed have lingering feelings of hatred, guilt, and resentment stirring between them—while being inexplicably drawn to each other . . .

I really enjoyed this book, it seemed that there was a lot of mystery to be uncovered and it unfolded beautifully. I really liked our main character Laurie, I felt sorry for her as she was clearing out her mums house but they had never gotten on and didn't really have a relationship. I could tell that she felt lonely as she was back in chapel field so it made sense that she started thinking about when she was a teenager growing up there and wanting to make amends to Ed.
Ed was our other main character and as the story unfolded I just couldn't help feeling more and more sorry for him and everything that he had gone through alone in the past 20 years. I thought that his character was written brilliantly.
I liked that we had the multiple timeframes within the book, going back to when the parents were just meeting back in the 70's as well. As the story was progressing I was having the same thoughts as Laurie so fully understand her concerns - however what the actual end result was really surprised me as well as the characters!
Really well written and I just couldn't put it down as the storyline had me hooked and I needed to find out how this story was ending for them all. You can grab a copy of the book here #Aff
