Review & Blog Tour ~ The Guests by Agnes Ravatn

It started with a lie…

Married couple Karin and Kai are looking for a pleasant escape from their busy lives, and reluctantly accept an offer to stay in a luxurious holiday home in the Norwegian fjords.

Instead of finding a relaxing retreat, however, their trip becomes a reminder of everything lacking in their own lives, and in a less-than-friendly meeting with their new neighbours, Karin tells a little white lie…

Against the backdrop of the glistening water and within the claustrophobic walls of the ultra-modern house, Karin´s insecurities blossom, and her lie grows ever bigger, entangling her and her husband in a nightmare spiral of deceits with absolutely no means of escape…

Simmering with suspense and dark humour, The Guests is a gripping psychological drama about envy and aspiration … and something more menacing, hiding just below that glittering surface…

I loved this book! I read it in one sitting as I found that I was quickly drawn into the story and wanted to see where this 'holiday' would lead us. I think most people would love to pretend that they owned a fabulous cabin and would think that they would never see the people they had spoken to again. Not in this book!!

I really enjoyed the fact that Karin and Kai had to keep coming up with more and more lies and excuses during their stay at the cabin. As I was reading through the book, you could really tell that Karin had real issues with her own insecurities and that she seemed very unhappy with her life, this was a shame as she has a wonderful husband, 2 children and a roof over her head. I definitely think that her previous issues were at play here.

The dining scenes with the neighbours really made me laugh at times as it did read like everyone was just pretending! And it almost felt awkward to read, never mind to be sat there enduring it in reality!

I was slightly disappointed with the ending - although it was good I'm quite a 'detail' person and found that I still have quite a few questions - although, maybe if I'm lucky there may be a book two to satisfy me with those answers! You can grab yourself a copy here #Aff
