Review & Blog Tour ~ The Journalist by John Reid Young

Everyone makes mistakes. Not everyone does their duty.

Jamie Ryder is a highly-trained officer in the British army with a beautiful girlfriend and a bright future. But within a few days he has quit his regiment, and his girlfriend has left him.

Lost and alone, Jamie considers opportunities offered by security contacts in London. But a chance meeting sees him heading impulsively to the Scilly Isles to try and rebuild his life.

While there he meets Brendan, a personable Irishman who’s desperate for help to deliver a yacht to a port in northern Spain. Yet this isn’t any normal cruise, but a gun-running operation between the IRA and Basque Separatists.

Jamie finds himself at the centre of a deadly game of cat and mouse, and a terrifying plot only he can foil. It would be easy to look the other way, but he’s not running any more. With lives on the line Jamie knows he must do his duty…

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the way it started off and we had the dual storylines on the go, although it was a slow start there was something that really intrigued me about these unrelated stories that made me want to carry on reading to find out more.

I felt so sorry for Jamie and the fact that he ended up alone and lost after giving up the thing that he loved only to be let down. I really liked his character though and wanted him to find happiness and purpose again. I know he didn’t expect to find it the way he did and if I’m honest nor did I!!

This was where the pacing of the storyline really picked up and I just couldn’t put the book down. I found that I just had to keep reading as it had me gripped and I really was not sure how this was going to end. There were moments that had me on the edge of my seat as it could easily have gone one of two ways.

I think that the concept and idea of the book was brilliant and very cleverly written. I liked the writing style and thought that not only our main character Jamie but also the supporting characters were all well thought about and written too. Whilst the ending is satisfying I am wondering if we will hear more? I certainly hope so. You can grab a copy here #Aff
