Stand Up Guy by Nina Kaye

Writer's picture: HalesHales

After a string of failed relationships – romantic and platonic – Lea’s had enough of watching life happen without her. When she bumps into Shep, a comedian at the Edinburgh festival in need of accommodation, it feels like destiny. And voilá – Lea now has a lodger and some company.

The two get on like a flat on fire, and Lea can’t resist falling for outgoing Shep. But she knows it’s a mistake that will cost her heart – he’s just another guy passing through, after all. And with Shep’s stand-up routine edging him closer to his big break, there’s no way he’ll stick around.

Love is no laughing matter as the festival draws to a close. Can Lea find the confidence to step up and confess her feelings to Shep? Will he want to stay?

I really enjoyed this read. I liked our main character Lea, and I really felt like I connected with her as I absolutely know how it feels to be alone. She is so kind and caring, and it's a good thing that she is, otherwise she may never have met Shep.

I liked Shep too. He seemed like a really genuine guy, even when people were putting doubts into Lea's mind about him using her for material for future shows. I was really hoping that I had judged Shep correctly and that he was being genuine. I also liked the fact that you could really tell how much this potential break could mean to him.

I thought that together as a couple they worked really well; it was just a shame it was only for the duration of the festival. I was happy that Shep initiated the meeting with the trio of Tess, Becca, and Sal for Lea; however, I must say that the way Sal was written came across exactly as it was meant to, and I was not a fan!

This was really well-written, and I seemed to fly through the story, really enjoying learning about Lea and Shep. But I must admit I was a little sad when it ended, as I just wanted to read more! In addition to the comedy, there are also some other topics that come across really well in the book.
