The Croaking Raven by Guy Hale ~ Readalong Review

Writer's picture: HalesHales

DC Toby Marlowe has just landed his dream posting but the quiet streets of Shakespeare’s Stratford are about to suffer a reign of terror. A name from the past

has returned, intent on revenge. A series of murders go unsolved but Toby realises that the killer seems to be following the plot of Hamlet.

Can Toby and his boss, DS Fred Williams, find the killer before all the actors at the RSC are dead?

The Croaking Raven doth bellow for revenge.

I loved this book! I really like our main policemen Toby & Fred. They have had me laughing out loud at times! Toby is new to the station and role and it shows with some of the uncertainty that he has. Whilst Fred was NOT happy that he was made to partner Toby, they do make a good duo and I think Fred did warm to Toby. Fred however, does seem to be a law unto himself to say the least! If I just say ‘stairs’ it will make sense when you read the book!

I really liked the fact that we know who the killer is from the off. We even know why he’s killing. So do the police! The problem is they have no clue what he looks like, where he lives or if he’s even still alive! As awful as it is, I do actually feel really quite sorry for the killer and can understand his need for revenge. He is however definitely veering off-script and murder is a bit harsh (but excellent reading)!

I really do like our characters in it, they are definitely a mixed bunch with some VERY quirky ones included. I would say that whilst I’m not a big Shakespeare fan I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about it in this book and the concept of using it in the book is very clever. I loved the writing style of the book and the fact that it has short chapters which I always think makes me read quicker!

I couldn’t put this book down as it just had me gripped and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series and hope I don’t have to wait too long! Either way I know it’ll be worth the wait!
